There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. – Leonard Cohen
Rainbows are fun, and I was ready for fun and sunshine after a rainy cold winter. A prism I had received from a friend hung in my window, and as the sun began to make its springtime debut, rainbows appeared throughout the room. This collection of new work began from that visual inspiration to catch colors of the spectrum if I could.
I thought ink on paper could not match the effect of the bending of light...Or could it? So, as the goal of my show this month was to get ideas out of my head, it was time for me to go to the studio and experiment.
I continue to experiment with how ink can behave in unexpected ways. Rollers are much different tools than brushes or other mark makers. Rather than mixing inks on the glass table, I often apply layers of basic colors directly to the plate. I am always surprised how these layers interact to make colors I wasn’t expecting.
Most of my work is nature inspired. I see abstract images in textures and patterns all around, especially here on the coast. Our grasses on the headlands change with the seasons—from lush greens after beneficial rains to flowing soft waves of gold as summer ripens them. Patterns formed by the movement of water, ocean or river feed my head with endless possibilities. Don’t get me started on what I see in our skies!
My work can be interpreted in many ways; I invite you to find your own impressions.
