I approach sculpture and painting very differently.
Ideas and images for sculpture come to me at odd times, often when I am relaxed and receptive. I can play with an image, and sometimes it develops into something interesting and clear enough to work out in clay. I hand model the figures in porcelain, hollow them out, and detail them. Then they are fired and painted with oil paints.
When painting, I improvise using transfer techniques, brushwork, stencils, and oil paint on heavy paper or canvas. I follow a series of steps, as if using a map with mostly blank space, till I find myself in interesting country.
Making art is one way to touch the harmony and beauty which is alive in us and in the world even amid pain and chaos. I hope the work communicates some sense of the mystery I feel at the heart of existence.
