In this body of work I let the possibilities of my materials lead me. I used my collection of encaustic scrapings that provided unexpected mixtures of color and texture, as well as my stash of papers, printed matter and found objects.
As the work progressed, themes evolved. I was introduced to a poem by Wendell Berry that begins, "I've come down from the sky..." Those first words captured my imagination and resulted in the pieces Down from the Sky and Blowing in the Wind.
During this time I read about new excavations at Pompeii where I spent a memorable visit. I am deeply drawn to ancient cultures and artifacts. The collages, Remembering Pompeii, were inspired by my having seen frescoes and walls that survived the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The pieces The Center Barely Holding, Gently Falling, and In the Weeds were inspired by my wax medium with unexpected results.
