Out of My Head

2024 Exhibit

The positive response to my 2023 exhibit “Out of my Hands” led me to ask “Now what?” That question got stuck in my head and could only be met with one answer—work it out. It was important for me to challenge my printmaking process by expanding my range of color, layering, and mark making, while letting out a held breath and enjoying the surprises.

I approach the surface with nothing in mind—yet there are visions in my head seeking an escape valve. Just as Pissarro advised his young students, I look for the kind of nature that suits my temperament. I build layers of color inspired from a rainbow or a coastal sunset using rollers in place of a brush. My marks are painterly swoops and swashes made with the looseness and unpredictability of watercolor.

Tom Petty sang, “Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks.” I’m finding I enjoy both as long as I’m exploring new possibilities.
